My father died in agony and considerable distress in August 2013. Nobody in this day and age should be allowed to suffer in the way he did over a two day period. I had to watch my father suffer with my other family members depsite frequently pleeing with the ward nurses and doctors for somthing to be done to ease his pain. Knowing that my father was going to pass away the doctors in charge of his care failed to put a pallative care programme in place and it was only in the last few hours of his life that the macmillan team were brought in to provide that care and unsurprisinly as soon as they did, my father was at ease and calm. During the week at hospital at my fathers side i saw people, most of them elderly being regualry ignored, despite shouting for help. The nurses failed to do the simple things such as not making sure patients were kept hydrated or fed properly. I recall on a number of occasions people having to assist people myslef to stop them wetting the bed and providng them with some dignity as the nurses simply were not around to do the job. Furthermore it was quite clear that in A&E the doctors did not have the knowledge to recognise my fathers serious and fairly common condition, and that the many many hours spent not tackling the issue in A+E could have made his situation worse. Based on this experience, i can only view this hospital as a shambles and i hope to god that standards have improved in the past year for the sake of the patients and their family members.
